Norwich buries Sus Valley with three-point barrage

Norwich 81, Susquehanna Valley 41

NORWICH – It was number 12 for 12 on Norwich’s senior recognition night.

Josh Borfitz, who wears the number 12, hit his club’s team-record 12th total three-pointer late in the third quarter. At that point, Norwich had the game well at hand as the Tornado shattered the team-record of three-pointers in a game finishing with 14 in picking up their eighth win this season.

“People might think that 14 three-pointers is unusual, but we run the same offense against zone defenses or man-to-man,” said Norwich coach Mark Abbott. “We practice the same thing every day, and those shots (three-pointers) are what we expect to get. Sometimes we make them, and sometimes we don’t. Tonight, we shot the three-pointers at a high percentage.”

Norwich scored all 21 of its points in the first quarter on three-pointers. It wasn’t until the 6:09 mark of the second period – after a Jon Foulds layup courtesy of Derek Hughes’ pass – that Norwich scored its first two-point bucket. At that point, Norwich led 29-15, and the lead grew to 43-23 at halftime with 10 three-pointers already in the books. Borfitz had four in the opening half, Foulds and Casey Edwards had two apiece, while Dennis Oralls and Richie Bonney also found the range from the behind the three-point arc. “That just doesn’t happen, and we might not ever see that again,” Abbott said of the start of game as the first 27 points came on nine three balls. “We knew they would play zone, and with their size, it would be difficult for them to match up with our quickness in man-to-man.

“They switched to man-to-man in the second half, and they couldnt’ do it. It allowed us to get into more gaps and seams. We were taking what the defense was giving us.”

Borfitz finished a game-high 21 points including five three balls, Foulds had a varsity-high 17 coming off the bench, and Richie Bonney scored 15 points. The 81 points was also a season-high for the Tornado, who remain in the STAC Central Division hunt, one game behind Maine-Endwell.
