Greene hangs on for victory; Oxford defeats Saints in overtime

Greene 15, Susquehanna Valley 14

GREENE – Susquehanna Valley nearly pulled off its second big upset in as many weeks.

The Trojans (6-2) stopped a two-point conversion with 1:27 remaining on the clock to preserve a one-point lead and hold on for a tight victory Friday at George Raymond Field.

Greene turned the ball over five times in the game, twice in the fourth quarter inside its own 25. SV was stopped on a fourth-and-goal from the two the first time, but cashed in on an 11-yard scoring run from Laurent Dure to close the gap to one point.

Greene seniors Tyler Beckwith and Nic Puglisi penetrated quickly to stuff Dure on the two-point try. “We knew from week one to now, Susquehanna Valley has improved a ton,” said Greene head coach Tim Paske. The Sabers lost their first six games, but upset previously-unbeaten Newark Valley last week. “We gave them hope, and they stayed in the game. They kept fighting, and that’s a credit to their staff and players.”

Greene broke an 8-8 halftime tie executing a 12-play, 63-yard drive late in the third quarter. On a fourth-and-nine from the SV 15, Dan Jenks took a quick handoff, and squirted through the left side for the go-ahead touchdown. It was a similar situation to the Trojans’ initital score when Kurt Shear scored on a fourth-and-goal from the seven – on a run play.

“We had run the ball to get down there (near the endzone), and they were defending a certain way with our trips formation,” Paske said. “The kids came through. The O-line made the blocks and Jenks ran hard.”

Sus Valley capitalized on Greene’s first turnover of the game recovering a fumble deep in the Trojans’ territory. Dure scored on an eight-yard run, and added the two-point run.

Shear finished off a long drive and added the two-point run to knot the game in the second quarter. Shear, getting his most extensive work of the season, finished with a game-high 97 yards on 21 carries.
