Early offense lifts Greene over Oxford

Greene 3, Oxford 1

BINGHAMTON – Greene did all of its damage in the first two innings, and if not for some outstanding defense by Oxford, would have likely cruised to a more comfortable victory in Tuesday’s Section IV, Class C playoff game at the BAGSAI Complex.

Rebecca Hanrahan doubled in the first inning to score Erin Smith, and a Hanrahan two-run single in the second inning plated Haley MacLaren and Smith. Earlier in the second inning, Oxford shortstop Alyshia Crawford flagged an infield grounder deflected by pitcher Jackie Heggie, and threw to catcher Julie Heggie, who tagged out Greene baserunner Amy David.

Crawford also jumped to snag a line drive for an out, and hit Julie Heggie with a strike from second base in the fifth inning cutting down Greene’s Tara Bub for the third out of that inning.

“I bet (Crawford) probably saved them at least three runs,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “We hit the ball well, they just made the plays. I saw how (Oxford) played at the end of the season, and I knew this would be a tough game.”

Oxford (7-12) had few baserunners – and just three total hits – against Hanrahan. Crawford had a single in the fourth, the first hit of the game for her team, moved to third after a fielder’s choice and stolen base, and scored on Jackie Heggie’s groundout.
