Norwich firefighters honored at Maydole grave

Firefighters from around the area participated in a memorial service at the grave of David Maydole at the Mount Hope Cemetery in the Town of Norwich Friday. Maydole passed away in 1882 and owned the Maydole Hammer Co. in Norwich, which spawned one of the earliest fire companies in the area, the Maydole Hose Company. The company still operates in Norwich Fire Department to this day. Firefighter rang an antique American LaFrance fire bell taken from a retired fire engine. The bell chimed 13 times in honor of each decade of service for the past 130 years of sacrifices and commitments by local crews.
