Area Youth Enjoy Enrichment Opportunities At BOCES
Published: April 2nd, 2009

NORWICH – Delaware-Chenango-Madison-Otsego (DCMO) BOCES Enrichment Services has collaborated with a number of leading individuals and organizations in our communities to bring area youth exciting enrichment opportunities. Opportunities available to school districts are designed to reach a vast array of students’ interests and to encourage creative thought and decision making.

This fall, DCMO BOCES successfully hosted their annual mentor program, “It’s a Guy Thing,” which is designed for 5th and 6th grade boys. A similar event, “Women Helping Girls Make Choices,” is set to take place on May 2 at SUNY Oneonta. This program is designed for 5th and 6th grade girls. These one-day events are made possible through collaboration with the Catskill Regional Teacher Center and SUNY Oneonta. These events would not be possible without the leaders in our communities who volunteer and act as mentors for the day.

Other events coordinated by DCMO BOCES include the Region 13 Odyssey of the Mind competition, a local Forensic Speech and Debate tournament, The Daily Star Regional Spelling Bee, and the Scholar Recognition Banquet.

Odyssey of the Mind took place on Feb. 21 with 56 schools participating from the DCMO and ONC BOCES supervisory regions. Odyssey of the Mind is an annual international competition that is dedicated to creative problem solving and student teamwork. The local Forensic Speech and Debate tournament was held on Feb. 28 at the Unatego Central School. Eleven school districts competed in events including humorous interpretation, dramatic interpretation, original oratory, and the Lincoln-Douglass debate.
