Class B Tournament

WAVERLY – B-G/Afton crowned just one champion, but sends on at least a dozen wrestlers to the Section IV Tournament next weekend at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.

The Bears had six wrestlers advance to the finals, one less than tournament champion Waverly, but just one – Vinnie Buttice – at 152 pounds finished on top. Also reaching the finals were Wayne Cirigliano (112), Justin Cirigliano (125), Chris Burnett (135), Daren Terpstra (140), and Victor Coronado (145).

Coronado, a two-time state qualifier, lost a 6-1 decision to Waverly’s Brian Sewalt.

B-GA’s two-time sectional champion, Danny Gormley, did not wrestle, although if able to wrestle next week, is a shoo-in to receive a wild-card entry into sectionals.

Norwich, while not boasting gaudy results through the season, advanced seven of eight wrestlers to next weekend’s tourney.

Tanner Cummings (103) and Keegan Levesque (171) led the way with runner-up finishes. Cummings, the only top-four seeded wrestler for Norwich entering the tournament, was expected to move on. Levesque, who brought a losing record into the tournament, is beginning to peak. “I knew we would probably get a couple into the tournament, and we felt we had a couple more with outside shots,” said Norwich coach Terry Hagenbuch. “Keegan missed over a week’s worth of time during the season, but he’s coming back now and wrestling well.”
