Greene 1, Southern Cayuga 0

GREENE – Greene will point to head coach Randy Smith’s credo after Wednesday’s matchup: “Win and move on.”

It was not the Trojans’ typical display of offense, but it was an opening-round playoff win for the number four seeded team in Section IV’s Class C playoffs. “We escaped,” Smith said. “They had nine back in the defensive third, and we could not generate much offense. We did not pass well, and their goalie played great.”

Southern Cayuga keeper Hillary Chidsey stopped three one-on-one breakaways, but was unable to contain the Trojans’ Megan McDermott on what was the equivalent of a broken play.

McDermott scored with 11:16 left in the first half, her 33rd goal of the season, after taking a deflected pass off a Southern Cayuga player’s leg. “Their keeper and their style of play kept them in the game,” Smith said.

Greene will host Delhi Saturday afternoon.
