NORTH SYRACUSE – Sherburne-Earlville set a new school standard crowning three sectional champions at the Section III, Division II Wrestling Tournament at Cicero-North Syracuse High School this past weekend.

Greg DuVall (112), who was a titlist at year ago at Unadilla Valley, won his second crown, Chris Pike (285) repeated as the heavyweight top dog, and Wheeler Brunschmid (171) pulled one of the bigger surprises coming from the fourth seed to earn his first section title.

Brunschmid avenged a semifinals loss in last week’s Class B tournament to Jordan Jerome of South Jefferson to reach the finals. Once there, he rallied for an exciting 8-5 win over Watertown IHC’s Brian Piarulli. “Wheeler was in a cradle for about a minute and a half in the second period, and he fought out of that to get a reversal,” said S-E assistant coach Brian Hicks of a move that put Brunschmid up 6-5 over Piarulli. “The other kid chose neutral in the last period, and Wheeler was able to get the takedown.”
