Quality league win for unbeaten Trojans

Girls’ Soccer

Greene 1, Unatego 0

GREENE – Any win over Unatego is a good win, said Greene coach Randy Smith, whose Trojans improved to 5-0 on the season with a shutout over the MAC’s perennial top team.

Megan McDermott knocked in a direct kick from 25 yards out just inside the far post with just 1:40 left in the half. Liz Wentlent made 11 saves, and she was aided by defenders Tara Bub and Haley McLaren. “There was not a goalie in this league who was going to catch (Megan’s) shot,” Smith said. “This is a big win for us. Unatego was coming off a tournament win in Middleburgh and was playing well, but our defense withstood the challenge.”

Greene (3-0, 5-0) plays Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Sidney.

Seton Catholic Central 3, Norwich 0

NORWICH – Seton Catholic Central did all of its damage in the first half to shutout the Purple Tornado Monday.

Erin Jones scored unassisted at the 18-minute mark for the only score the Saints would need. Miranda DeSantis and May Armstrong added first-half tallies. “We didn’t play a bad first half, but our second half was tremendous,” said Norwich coach Jeremy Bolton. “We played with more aggression and were attacking more. We were pressuring them instead of them pressuring us.”

Norwich plays at Windsor Thursday.
