CHENANGO COUNTY – A severe weather warning has been issued for Chenango County today. A flash flood and wind warning are in effect today from 1 until 7 p.m., according to the City of Norwich and Chenango County Joint Emergency Operations Center.

Severe thunderstorms will approach our area this afternoon, bringing wind gusts in excess of 60 miles per hour and with 1 inch of rain an hour or more. Residents are advised to monitor local media for continuing updates and should prepare for widespread power outages and for downed trees or power lines. Also expect roads to become closed due to the flooding and debris obstructing traffic. High profile vehicles are also advised to avoid the roads because of the strong winds.

Emergency Management Coordinator A. Jones said, “There is a significant threat of severe weather impacting our area starting this afternoon and continuing into Saturday.” Jones said there may be a small chance of an isolated tornado. Heavy rains are expect to continue today and tomorrow.

Norwich Police Chief Joseph Angelino warns people to secure any items such as holiday decorations that might be blown away. Also the police department would like to remind people that no one should cross a road barrier.

After the front passes, it will bring behind it much colder temperatures for tonight below freezing with a possibility of snow on Saturday.
