Icy rescue at Hunts Pond

SOUTH NEW BERLIN – The New Berlin and South New Berlin fire departments responded to the scene of an icy water rescue at Hunts Pond State Forest Sunday night, first reported shortly after 8:30 p.m., according to authorities.

Two individuals, whose names were not released as of press time, were transported via UVAC ambulance to UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital after falling through the ice at Hunts Pond, while another pair were evaluated and treated on the scene. A dog, in addition to the group’s equipment, was also safely rescued. Authorities reported that the four individuals were ice fishing when the ice began to crack. The two subjects who had fallen in were able to extricate themselves prior to the arrival of emergency personnel, while the second pair were stranded on the ice before being rescued. The recent rise in temperatures, said authorities, contributed to the incident. There were no serious injuries – or cases of hypothermia – reported, and emergency personnel cleared the scene shortly after midnight.
