Volunteers use Scrabble to support literacy

NORWICH – Literacy Volunteers of Chenango County hosted its ninth annual Scrabble for Literacy tournament this month at the SUNY Morrisville Norwich campus. Players brought in pledges to support the adult literacy program at Opportunities for Chenango and vie for prizes in three categories.

The winners in the Beginner Division, in order from first place to third place, were: “Team Norris” (Dorlene, Byron and Victoria Norris), “D&D” (Debbie Ecker and Dawn Sharki), and “Wheels 3” (Linda Spoor and Blanche Pardo).

Winners in the Intermediate Division, from first place to third place, were: “Generations” (Wanda Kuhn and Adam Munio), “Golden Girls” (Pam Hernandez and Trudy Johnson), and “Advantage Signs” (Sam Pertilla).

Advanced Division winners were: “Sherburne United Church of Christ Women’s Fellowship” (Susan Kmiec) with the first place win and “Wheels I” (Donna Anderson and Barb Tallett) coming in second.

“Highest Single Play” went to Susan Kmiec, with the “Highest Overall Score” being achieved by “Generations.” The “Marilyn Russell Award” was given to Susan Kmiec for bringing in the most pledges.

Area businesses, community groups and churches, as well as participants, generously donated to this annual event. All proceeds will support the Literacy Volunteers of Chenango County Adult Basic Education Program. Additional details, including contributors and photos of winning teams, will be posted on the OFC website and its Facebook page.
