Norwich 93, Holland Patent 92

NORWICH – On senior recognition night, Norwich returned the favor to visiting Holland Patent in a non-league meet Tuesday.

Leading by just three points, the Purple Tornado finished second and third in the meet-closing 400-yard freestyle relay to eke out the one-point win. Just a season ago, Holland Patent defeated the Tornado swimmers by a single point.

“Our relays really came through for us tonight,” said Norwich coach Kevin Diefenbacher. “It started with a one-two finish in the 200 medley relay, and I knew we needed to finish second and third in the last relay. Holland Patent has a real good team that is senior-laden. As we have all season, we were able to pile up the depth points.”

Norwich had just five victories on the night. Curtis Woodard took the 200 individual medley and Ricky Finnegan closed the first half of the meet with a win in diving. Adding first-place finishes were John Manwarren in the 100 backstroke and Nick Mooney in the 100 breaststroke.

“Tonight we had to grab every point we could get,” Diefenbacher said. “It was a real exciting meet.”

Norwich competes in the Class B meet next Wednesday at Owego.
