If I wrote this before the election you might have said this guy is just pushing his political wheelbarrow. But you cannot say this now. We are far away from the next election. And so I can express something akin to the elephant in the bathtub.
That is, it ought to be obvious to most of us that this president’s economic policies have flopped. He was handed a big recession. His team made big moves to counter it. They did not work.
He blamed Bush. He blamed the technology of ATM machines and airport ticket kiosks. He blamed the rich. He blamed Rush Limbaugh and FoxNews. He blamed the janitors. He blamed everybody but his policies. Last week we learned the economy is barely treading water. So he blamed the Republicans. C’mon, Mr. President. Knock off the bulltweedie.
Yes, the Republicans control one house of Congress. But your party controls the Senate. The Senate has not passed a budget in years. Which is against the law. And you control the White House. And you hired a bunch of “czars” to extend your powers to include stuff Congress used to control. You demanded Congress pass your program. You promised the program would win the day. Congress passed it. You plunged us into debt from here to a distant planet. And now the economy is dead in the water. And you blame the Republicans? The dog ate my homework?
Mr. President, knock it off. Grow up. Stop treating voters as if they are idiots. Admit that your policies flopped. Move on. Try different policies. Get us the hell out of the mud. Face the absolute fact that the recovery you engineered is the worst recovery in U.S. history.
Your critics said your program ignored small business. They said it did worse. It punished small business. It punished their owners. Critics predicted those small businesses would not create new jobs. And this would hurt us. Because small businesses make up our jobs machine. Big businesses are busy trimming jobs while small businesses typically add jobs.
You ignored those critics. Well, dammit, they were right. This economy is not producing many new jobs. And the reason is that those small businesses are not expanding. Just as the critics predicted. Various polls tell us small business operators are doing exactly what the critics predicted. And you continue to ignore them.
Critics said the stupid unions you were coddling would not create jobs. They said that big business would not. They said the only new jobs that would get created under your program would be government jobs.
Guess what, Mr. President. If your daughter spent an hour studying economics she could tell you the critics had your number.
I know that flushing a toilet is a political matter for you. Everything large and small is. But, Mr. President, this is not a political issue. Jobs are not Republican or Democrat.
Amidst my doubts, I hope you have it in you to rise above politics. Suck on a lemon. Put the health of the economy before politics. Fashion policies that many a cretin knows would stimulate some growth. Grow up. Stop blaming others. Take responsibility for your policies and what they have wrought. Change policies.
Be a leader. Be a president.
