I hear quite a few complaints about modern music. To that I have to ask, what exactly are you listening to?
If I had to guess, I would say the radio, and believe me, that is not an accurate representation of my generation’s music. There are plenty of fine songs on the radio, but there is also an unbelievable amount of garbage.
I would therefore point anyone looking for an accurate idea of what all these crazy kids are listening to today towards the internet.
Probably the best way to find new music is to log on and just start clicking links. A couple of days ago I discovered a band called The Dear Hunter, and I’ve spent the time since then listening to their albums and getting a feel for a whole new sub-genre.
I know in the past I’ve written some about Hip-Hop and I’ll take this moment to mention again that not all rap is about getting money, cars, and, ahem, women.
In fact, most of the underground hip-hop is filled with social messages and life lessons. I would seriously urge everyone to listen to some Atmosphere. “Lucy” is one of the greatest songs ever written and if you don’t have tears in your eyes by the end of it, shame on you.
I will admit, I’m also guilty of judging music before taking a listen and for that I am truly sorry. There is one medium that I have ignored for quite a while and the time may have finally come for me to break down and dive in head first.
That’s right, ladies and gentlemen of America, I’ll watch American Idol.
And actually, the reason is because everyone else is watching it. That doesn’t mean I’m jumping on a bandwagon. Actually, it just makes sense that if enough people become interested in something it’s going to morph and change into new shapes and styles. When American Idol first appeared on television screens it seemed to be just another reality show meant to suck the life out of the 9-5 crowd.
Now, it has transformed into the front-line of new musical acts and a way to enjoy the classics with the new. I actually saw Phillip Phillips singing “U Got it Bad” and it was magical.
So, fine, I’ll check it out. But everyone has to break through some boundaries with me. Get out there and discover some new music. Trust me, it’s worth it.
