WALTON – Unadilla Valley pulled away with five runs in the fifth inning to open its 2012 season with a victory.

Kurt Haycook’s second double of the game drove in two runs in the fifth to support winning pitcher Brandon Miles. Miles had six strikeouts and scattered six hits in a route-going effort. “UV has a nice team with some good players and some very strong arms,” said Walton coach Gary Backus.

Brett Smith doubled twice and went 3-for-4 to lead the Storm. Justin Hofer and Haycook added two hits.

BAINBRIDGE – Harpursville won for the second time in as many nights against Chenango County opposition blanking Bainbridge-Guilford Tuesday.

Harpursville erupted for 12 runs in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach. The first two Hornets reached on errors to start the uprising. “We don’t commit those two errors to start the fifth, maybe things work out differently,” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly. “But we have to hit the ball better. We had just five hits in the game.”

Austin Bauerle doubled twice for B-G, and Lucas Butcher also had two hits.

Jon Arnold and Jim Kelley led Harpursville with two hits apiece.
