Vipers win season-ending championship

NDICOTT—The Norwich YMCA Vipers’ third- and fourth-grade team was the victor at the recent season-ending 2011 Ken Wilson Chevrolet Memorial Basketball Tournament.

Ten teams from around the Southern Tier and northern Pennsylvania competed, and the Vipers made it to the final game by handily defeating two rivals earlier that day by 28-10 and 43-4 margins before defeating Johnson City in the final, 27-16.

The Norwich YMCA's team represented Chenango County well with players hailing from Earlville, Greene, Norwich, Oxford, and Sherburne.

At the start of the championship game, the size and defensive play of the Johnson City team initially caught the Vipers off guard.  Johnson City held the Vipers scoreless in the first quarter, and ended the first half with an 8-6 lead. Gabe Irwin and J.T. Vinal were the only Vipers to score in the first half.
