Safe Summer Fun kicks off in Norwich Friday

NORWICH – For two decades, Norwich children and their parents have kicked off summer with safety in mind.

This Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. at Kurt Beyer Park, Chenango County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services, along with The Place and several other community agencies, will be holding the 20th annual Safe Summer Fun Day.

“All the kids are now just getting out of school and basically what we’re trying to do is kick off the summer in a safe way, to remind them to make good choices over their vacation,” said Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor Kevin Nial.

The family-oriented event is sponsored by approximately 30 local businesses, government agencies and student organizations.

“Although we target the program at the youth, everyone can attend and benefit from the activities being offered. You’re never too old for safety and parents play a key role in helping their children make good decisions,” said Heidi Foster, Service Learning Program director at The Place.
