Marauders give up unlikely goals to Ilion

Boys’ Soccer

Ilion 3, S-E 0

ILION – An unlikely set of defensive mistakes broke a scoreless tie and led Ilion to a win over Sherburne-Earlville Thursday.

A clear attempt by the Marauders’ defense led to an own goal with just 15 minutes remaining in the game. Not much later, Ilion benefited from another own goal when a header by an S-E defender in front of the goal skimmed backward into the net.

Ilion’s lone credited tally came on Corey Rowland’s bending cornerkick late in the game. “We were the aggressor, we just had some mental lapses,” said S-E coach Mike Rodriguez. “We changed our defensive alignment, so the shot statistics were deceiving. We packed it in, and a lot of the shots came from well outside the 18-yard box. With as athletic as Caleb (Brown) is in goal, we’ll take those any day.”

The Marauders (0-3) are at Mohawk Tuesday.

Edmeston 2, G-MU 1

EDMESTON –Edmeston took advantage of a miscue on the G-MU defensive end scoring with 8:43 left in the game to pull out the Tri-Valley League win.

The Panthers overcame G-MU’s lead to tie the game at halftime, and Adam Simmons curled in a cornerkick to unlock the tie. “I didn’t think we hustled to the ball well, and that’s been a big problem so far,” said G-MU coach Mark Luettger. “We have not been motivated enough to win the balls at midfield.”
