SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville departed from the Section III, Class B playoffs losing a quarterfinal matchup to visiting Marcellus Thursday.

The visiting Mustangs scored two in the first inning on just one hit, but took liberties on the basepaths advancing on a dropped third strike, two walks, and two passed balls.

S-E closed to 4-1 after Brenda Hoefler scored in the sixth inning on a Bree Neisinger groundout.

Marcellus put the game out of reach tacking on six runs in the seventh, the most runs S-E (16-5) gave up in any inning this season. Marissa Bankey had a two-run single, and a bases-loaded error scored two more runs. “The last inning...it was very ugly,” said S-E coach Scott Fitzpatrick.

Gina Cardarelli had 12 strikeouts and allowed just four S-E hits – two from Francesca Magro. “She threw a flat ball and moved it spot to spot,” Fitzpatrick said.

Cardarelli, Barb Henderson, and Kelly Harris had two hits apiece for the Mustangs.
