Decker elected to 11th term as board chairman

NORWICH – The Chenango County Board of Supervisors unanimously re-elected North Norwich Supervisor Richard B. Decker (R) as the board’s chairman at its re-organizational meeting Wednesday.

This will be Decker’s 11th year as county leader.

“It always seems difficult to find the right words to express my thanks to everyone for your support and confidence shown in me as your chairman,” Decker told the board. “Please accept a simple thank you.”

The board also re-appointed Richard W. Breslin as county attorney, William E. Evans as budget officer, Alan Gordon as public defender and R.C. Woodford as clerk of the board.

In his address, Decker requested that the board’s Finance Committee take a close look at the county’s Office of Real Property Tax Services.

“Everyone of us realizes we have to do something to improve the county’s tax services to our local assessors,” Decker said.

The committee will examine the tax department’s structure and staffing, possibly with the help of a consultant, and offer recommendations to improve the operation later this year.

Regular citizen, although I believe yuour remarks are well intentioned, I think you are missing the mark as to what I am talking about. The reason there are so many folks here mooching off the taxpayers on welfare is because this county has no jobs! If there was a burgeoning job market here, they (the welfare people) would have to leave as they would not have an excuse to not be employed.
Simple reasoning shows that Those citizens who choose to subsist on welfare look for counties with little in the form of jobs especially for unskilled individuals. The part time jobs that fill that description do not provide enough income for these folks to not qualify for welfare. The fact is housing would be much more lucrative if there was a burgeoning job market. So would every other service industry here in the county. The reason our taxes are so high is due to the lack of growth, and economic vitality, and even business retention. The board of supervisors seem to think that just taking care of business is all they have to do to qualify for "having done a great job". In fact, the economic health of our area is far more important. I see little in the press, or in releases from the board that reflects any sense of this aspect of their responsibilities. Yes, every once in a while there is a photo op for the board and Decker, but to be honest, we have lost more "good jobs" in the last year than we have gained.
If you like working at Walmart, up to 24 hours a week, then stay here, and live in a project pay no land tax and survive on welfare. The money that pays this is for the most part, income from other counties.
The Board, and Mr. Decker should be ashamed for the poor performance they have delivered in regards to growing this county. You cannot argue they have done anything but a poor job especially in light of the horrid economic growth figures we have had for the last 8 years in Chenango COunty.

Remember one thing; Captain Smith was a great captain, experienced and worldly wise. He still sailed the Titanic right into an iceberg and sunk the ship. Being a great Captain has nothing to do with good judgement. Decker fits Capt. Smith's profile to a T.

I would also like to congratulate Mr Decker on his re-election for the 11th time. I don't think anyone realizes the amount of work the supervisor's and chairman put into their elected positions. If Becky0001 wants to talk about taxes, maybe she should mention something about the much-overloaded welfare system in this county. If able-bodied folks would get out and find work instead of relying on the gov't to pay their way, the tax burden on everyone would be less.
thats my 2 cents.

Notice the first subject Decker comments about is about taxes. It is truly a shame that the board cannot see the damage THEY are doing to the area. Although they may be well intentioned, they are failing at leading the area.
To be a parasite on the people is not an accomplishment to be proud of. The county board has accomplished little in the name of growth, and have failed in their responsibilities to minimize the decay they are presiding over that is our local economy.

The rich get richer, only because the board doesn't care about the common citizen.
If they did, they would cut taxes in a meaningful way.

I would like to be the first online to congratulate Dick Decker. The Board of Supervisors made a very wise decision.
