GREENE – The largest fall festival hosted by the Greene community will take place this weekend and is expected to draw just over 15,000 people.
The First United Methodist Church of Greene will be sponsoring the 21st Applefest Saturday. A committee of about 15 volunteers help organize the event and about 100 more help bring it all together. The proceeds are taken by the church and much of it is given to local charities.
Janice Carr from United Methodist Church said at last week’s organizational meeting, more than 150 crafters had petitioned to participate in the festival.
Applefest will be ripe with a variety of fall activities and non-profit vendors. “All the food sold at the event will only be by non-profit groups, local sports teams, churches and Boy Scouts,” said Applefest Coordinator Greg Cobb. One could enjoy horse riding, wagon rides or get a taste of a variety of autumn-styled delights such as cider, apple butter and more. The members of the church home-baked over 850 pies, which is more than they’ve ever done before, said Cobb.
