OXFORD – Just 13 races into his 2007 season, Rusty Smith has already had a career season.
Although he may not match his 2001 points championship at Tioga Speedway, Smith, who travels to multiple tracks, won his career-high fourth race this season – the third at a different track – taking the Sunoco Race of Champions asphalt modified feature at Wyoming County Speedway last weekend.
“I just rode around the track most of those early laps, and people probably wondered what I was doing,” Smith.
Noting the tough conditions on the track that placed excessive wear and tear on his tires, Smith knew he needed a back wheel replacement at some point, so he waited for the first caution before pitting. That caution came on lap 43, and he was running 15th out of 20 cars. An efficient turn in the pits had Smith roaring out in 10th place, and he picked off cars slowly taking the lead with 14 laps remaining. He held on for the win, his first-ever in the Sunoco Series.
