Quick start propels Point past NHS

Whitney Point 8, Norwich 1

NORWICH – Whitney Point scored four runs in the second inning, and built an 8-0 lead to deal Norwich its first loss this season Wednesday.

Shawn Badger had a two-run single and Mike McCrone lashed an RBI triple in a four-run second inning for the Golden Eagles. “Their bats got hot and they were able to string some hits together,” said Norwich coach John Martinson. “Combined with our errors, we found ourselves in trouble early.”

Jordan Dean had two hits and three runs for Point, while Colton Covill drove in a team-best three runs.

Amos Parry led Norwich with two hits and an RBI single. Norwich is at Windsor Friday.

Greene 5, Afton 1

GREENE – A fast start carried Greene to its third win in four games Wednesday against Afton.

The Trojans opened with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Mike Porter smacked a lead-off double, moved to third on a throwing error, and initialized the scoring reaching home on a passed ball. John Carlin later added an RBI single, and a throwing error from the outfield plated the final run.

Nate Whittaker answered a shaky debut start earlier this season with five solid innings in which he allowed just one run. Corey Breck came on with the bases loaded and one out in the sixth and induced a double play to end the Afton threat.

Porter led Greene with two hits and a run scored. “Nate threw more strikes this game, and despite the two errors, I was impressed with our defense,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton. “Rogler (Karl) did a nice job keeping our hitters off balance. We were able to make contact, but didn’t get the same results as we did the day before against Hancock.”
