City plans summer street rehab projects

NORWICH – City officials discussed projected costs and budgeted funds for street rehabilitation projects planned in the coming season at a special meeting of the Public Works and Public Safety Committee Tuesday.

At last week’s meeting of the Finance and Personnel Committee, Public Works Superintendent Carl Ivarson said the estimated cost for planned projects was $111,541. The council budgeted $121,083. Ivarson explained this week that an additional $5,000 would be used to repair approximately 500 feet of Francis Avenue.

Although there is additional money budgeted, Ivarson told the committee that spending the total amount “could be a problem for the council in the future.”

“If material costs increase, the city could be over budget,” he said.

A portion of the funding for city street rehabilitation is taken from funds provided by the New York State Department of Transportation through the Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS). Norwich received $106,083 from CHIPS last year. Ivarson said some reports have indicated that the city could see a 4 percent reduction in CHIPS funding this year.
