ALBANY – For the first time this decade, a Chenango County wrestler did not bring home a state championship.
Nick Wilcox of Greene, a returning state champion, placed second, while B-G/Afton had three of its four wrestlers finish among the top six in their respective weight classes.
Wilcox, a freshman, was the reigning 103-pound state champion, and he was impressive in his route to the finals pinning third-place finisher, Eric Velez (Section XI) in 3:05.
His finals appearance was a rematch with Section V’s Ian Paddock, who was a returning state champion a year ago, but was beaten by Wilcox in the 103-pound semifinals en route to the title.
Paddock led 2-0 after a first-period takedown, and took control in the second period tilting Wilcox three separate times for back points and an impressive 13-0 advantage. Midway through the final period, Paddock completed a single-leg takedown sweeping Wilcox’s leg for the winning points by technical fall. It was just the second loss this season for Wilcox and sixth of his three-year varsity career.
Danny Gormley (96) and Justin Davy (130) wrestled back for fifth-place finishes to lead B-GA, while Ben Mumbulo (189) took home a sixth.
