Baden-Powell scouts honored

CHENANGO COUNTY – The National Boy Scouts of America recently honored Chenango’s governing council with an achievement award.

The Baden-Powell Council, which covers Chenango County Boy Scouts, was one of the few programs nationally recognized for the “Quality Council Award.” This award lauds councils which have had an overall outstanding program in all areas of performance.

Executive Director Stephen Hoitt said his council has shown outstanding performance in areas such as membership, fundraising and unit growth. Participation in the Scouts’ summer camp, in particular, increased 30 percent last year.

Also in 2006, the scouting program posted a record gain of 15.5 percent growth in membership, balanced its budget and awarded 76 young men the Eagle Scout Award. The council also saw 68 percent of its programs honored with excellence, compared to the national average of 50 percent.
