NORWICH – Accused serial burglar Kevin J. Begeal appeared in county court Friday to answer for the crime spree he allegedly perpetrated through many Oxford and Norwich businesses last fall.
Begeal’s appearance in court was brief and he entered a plea of not guilty to all charges. The Norwich City Police arrested Begeal for committing several burglaries in mid-October. He is charged with nine counts of 3rd degree burglary, 4th degree criminal mischief and petit larceny. The Onondaga County District Attorney’s office is also prosecuting Begeal on several other 2nd degree burglary charges that took place in the Syracuse area this past fall and is in contact with officials working the case here.
Public Defender Alan Gordon said in October that Begeal signed a statement that admitted his guilt in the rash of Norwich burglaries. After his arrest by Norwich City Police, Begeal gave a statement about his involvement in the crimes. “He signed a statement admitting involvement in Norwich,” said Gordon.
Gordon also said that Begeal’s crime spree may have been drug motivated. Gordon also indicated that Begeal may be a cocaine user. “He is a young man that appears to have a serious drug problem,” said Gordon. Police also voiced an earlier suspicion that the burglaries make have been drug related. Begeal revealed information at the time of his arrest about other recent drug violence taking place in the City of Norwich; soon after police made several other arrests.
