Volunteer programs within local communities have strong ties with the aging population and also with anyone wanting to give a lending hand.
The seniors population is increasing and various agencies have taken steps to ensure seniors are provided with quality housing, medical assistance, food and companionship. Chenango County Office of the Aging is the principal agency in the county to provide service to the aging community. With eight centers in the area, seniors can socialize as well as receive meals they otherwise may not get. Outreach workers provide health care information and provide ideas to keep seniors active in the community. For more information on services call the office at 337-1770.
The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) offers community service opportunities for residents of Chenango County over age 55. This non-profit organization gets seniors involved in community service projects and helps to aid the fight to keep seniors involved and socially active. Whether it is reading to children, helping in schools, or simply keeping someone company, seniors are given the chance to get out and socialize, find organizations of their interest and help make a difference in someone’s life – as well as their own. The RSVP Program is also responsible for the Christmas for Seniors project. The program kicked off Nov. 13 and RSVP volunteers will be asking Chenango county residents to donate items for seniors for the holidays. RSVP volunteers will match the gift to the individual, and the program needs names of people who would benefit from this service. Referrals will be taken through Dec. 8 and donations will be accepted through Dec. 18. In 2005 there were 125 seniors who received gifts from the community hand delivered by RSVP volunteers.
