Evening Sun Report

Girls’ Soccer

Norwich 1, S-E 0

SHERBURNE – Norwich defeated Sherburne-Earlville for the second time this season scoring in the final minutes in a shutout Monday night.

Carly Law took a shot after a mishandled play in goal that deflected into the net with 2:29 remaining. Norwich goalie Amy Clemens handled six saves in the Tornado’s fourth win of the season.

“The girls were pushed up on offense where they were supposed to be, and we finished off the play,” said Norwich coach Scotty Decker of the winning goal. “I saw improvement from both teams over the first time we played.”

Norwich defeated S-E in the Hamilton Tournament last month en route to the title.

Field Hockey

Sherburne-Earlville 2, Canastota 1 (OT)

SHERBURNE – It was a far cry from S-E’s 6-0 opening-game victory over Canastota.

Karli Harris scored with 42 seconds left in regulation to extend the game into overtime, and a Harris crossing pass to Courtney Kurtz ended in the winning goal 3 1/2 minutes into the extra period.

“They have improved a lot, and I told the kids it’s usually tougher the second time you play someone,” said S-E coach Sheila Cooman. “They had us backed up in our circle for a long time in the first half, and I was happy to get away with a 0-0 score.”
