Greene man arrested on animal cruelty charges

GREENE – The Chenango County Sheriff’s Department has charged a Greene man with several counts of animal cruelty. On Sept. 11, deputies arrested Douglas A. Hasslett, 50, Jackson Hill Road, Greene. Hasslett is charged with 10 counts of failure to license a dog, nine counts of cruelty to animals and one felony count of aggravated cruelty to animals for allegedly starving a dog to death.

Town of Greene Animal Control Officer Ann Olmstead led an investigation with the sheriff’s department regarding reports of a number of dogs not being cared for properly on Hasslett’s property.

Hasslett allegedly failed to provide the basic necessities for the animals such as food, water and adequate shelter. Animal control officers and the sheriff’s department raided Haslett’s property and discovered nine dogs that required immediate care and they also discovered a dead dog on the property. An autopsy performed on the deceased dog revealed it had been starved to death. The nine surviving dogs were taken to Pet Street Station Animal Hospital in Norwich for treatment.
