Jaycees show off results of Katrina project at Colorcape

NORWICH – The Greater Chenango Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) will be in attendance at this year’s Colorscape Chenango to display “thank you” cards handmade by children affected by Hurricane Katrina.

At last year’s Colorscape, the Jaycees provided the materials necessary so children could participate in designing sympathy cards for children affected by Hurricane Katrina. There were 164 cards made in hopes that they would reach the children in Louisiana.

Norwich’s Dr. Sara Long, a surgeon for the National Association of Chiefs of Police, was a consultant in the wake of Katrina. She made several trips back and forth to Louisiana last year. Throughout her travels she agreed to bring the cards made at Colorscape to the children living off the Gulf Coast in cruise ships.

Long didn’t think too much of the gesture at first, but when she was called back to the ship and saw that the children had made thank you cards to come back to New York with her, she realized the impact they must have made on the children.
