SHERBURNE – In a joint effort with the City of Utica, The Village of Sherburne filed a 71-page response to the state Public Service Commission objecting to New York Regional Interconnect’s request for waivers in their application to build a high power line through both municipalities.
Sherburne Mayor William Acee and Utica Mayor Timothy J. Julian announced the joint venture Tuesday, saying the motion asked the PSC to consider NYRI’s financial capability to build their proposed power line. The response was filed by attorney Dan Duthie, the attorney representing the two municipalities.
“The Public Service Commission’s duty should be to protect the public. In doing so, they should aid in the design of a reliable public grid and not allow an unknown private entity to haphazardly throw together a power line to Band-Aid an aging infrastructure,” Acee said.
The power company has filed an Article VII Application with the PSC seeking regulatory approval to build a 190 mile, 400 kV direct current (HVDC) transmission line from Oneida to Orange County. The power line would use towers between 80 and 130 feet tall every 800 feet to reinforce what www.evesun.com/topics/news/NYRI/">NYRI claims is an inadequate down-state electrical infrastructure, or power grid. Arguments against such a project have focused on the visual blight such a line would create, health risks, and the use of eminent domain by a private company. The company asked for several waivers in their initial application, and the dual municipality filing focuses largely on reasons to not grant the waivers.
