Chenango tries to estimate flood damages

NORWICH – Chenango County Public Works Director Randy Gibbon estimated between $2 and $3 million in damages to county roads and bridges following last week’s flood. The amount may change, however, as further destruction is discovered.

Individuals’ driveways were repaired first after the waters stopped rising, and work crews were busy this week opening up county Routes 38 and 17. County Route 4 between Preston and Oxford will take longer.

“The stream is in a different channel now,” Gibbon said. “We have to get permission from the DEC in order to dig the old river channel down.”

All but one section of 38 was opened Monday. Motorists traveling between Guilford and Bainbridge must detour onto Shapley Road to Yaleville Hucklebon Road. A temporary Yaleville bridge should be in place by Friday.
