Cleaning up on National Trails Day

OXFORD – Some people would like nothing more than to sleep in on a Saturday morning after a long week of work. But that would be a waste of time to members of the Bullthistle Hiking Club, and this Saturday is no exception.

Beginning at 8 a.m. at Bowman Lake State Park, the club will be celebrating their second annual National Trails Day with a hike along the trails, cleaning up along the way.

“National Trails Day is designed to be a public event,” club member Rebecca Hargrave said. “It’s a way of getting people outside and hiking.”

Hargrave said the event is sponsored by the American Hiking Society, and is geared toward all members of the community. A children’s’ hike, from 9 to 11 a.m., will also teach youth about how to use maps and the global positioning system. The group will also be preparing the area for a bridge which will be built over Bowman creek on the Finger Lakes Trail.
