Published: April 4th, 2016

VERNON (AP) ‐ State police officials say an 8-year-old girl was killed after she became trapped in her bedroom when a fire broke out in her family's central New York home over the weekend.

The Observer-Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/1PPVIRU ) fire crews responded to a two-story home on West Seneca Street in Vernon around 3:50 p.m. Sunday and found it fully engulfed in flames.

The blaze was controlled in about an hour.

A neighbor reported that a family of seven lived in the house. Some of the children and their mother were transported to SUNY Upstate Medical University Hospital in Syracuse.

Trooper Jack Keller says the structure has become unstable and has collapsed in portions, making it difficult for fire investigators.

The cause of the fire and the nature of the victim's death remain uncertain.
