SHERBURNE – After getting doubled up by Cortland in Friday’s opening-round game, the Marauders bounced back to place third in their own tournament topping UV by two-dozen points Saturday afternoon.

All-tournament selection Austin Jasper led three S-E players in double figures scoring 18 points, Julienne Alsheimer came off the bench to pour in 13, and Mick Khoury scored 12. “A lot of our offense came off of our defense, especially the second and third quarters,” said S-E coach Kevin Vibbard. “It was also nice to see the offensive balance.”

Cortland, a Class A finalist in Section III last year, used a substantial size advantage to dominate the interior in Friday’s opening-round win over S-E. Tourney MVP Zach Whelan scored 11 points as did Brian Hughes. “They play terrific team defense, and they really shut the lane down,” Vibbard said of Cortland. “I would say they will be one of the best teams we see this season.”

In Friday’s first game, Tully stretched its lead to 15 points with an 18-7 third quarter to defeat the Storm. Tully connected on eight three-pointers, four of those coming in the aforementioned third stanza.

Justin Hofer scored 19 points for UV, and David Dufresne added 11. “They stepped up and hit some shots when they needed to,” said UV coach Matt Osborne of Tully.
