Police chase with alleged drunk driver ends in collision

NORWICH Police chased a speeding vehicle driven by an intoxicated man Sunday through several city streets as he smashed into parked vehicles and drove over a lawn.

Norwich Police Chief Joseph Angelino reported that the entire incident, from the time the officer lit up his sirens to the time he slapped the handcuffs on the driver, lasted around two minutes.

Police would eventually charge 29-year-old Matthew S. White of 15 Rowley Ave. with two counts of driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, third degree fleeing a police officer, two counts of fourth degree criminal mischief and third degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, all misdemeanors.

According to police, the incident began early Sunday morning at around 2:45 on South Broad Street after an officer pulled over to speak with a pedestrian in an unrelated incident. As Officer Thomas Miller talked from the seat of his patrol car, another vehicle parked along South Board street began revving its engine and peeled out from a parking space.
