Returning once again to the many hills and dales of the Town of Columbus we have a brief article on the remaining two districts of this township. The lack of historical information is always frustrating, but with these two districts, even more so. This writer with Mrs. Avery apologizes for this, but without the information we can only briefly refer to these two districts.
DISTRICT #11 - CUTLER OR COLUMBUS HILL SCHOOL
This one-room school was located near the entrance to Sears Pond. For all the readers who are not familiar with the hills of Columbus, Sears Pond is located just off Chenango County Route 24 (more commonly known as Shawler Brook Road) just about half way between Sherburne and Columbus and just past the towns dividing line. The road in the township of Sherburne has just recently been resurfaced with oil and stone and is easy to identify. The remainder of that route has not been resurfaced! As you approach the entrance to Sears Pond there are two wooded corners leading to the pond. This writer is not aware if this school (long since gone) was on the east corner or west corner. When the information was forwarded for this article it was noted that the school had fallen down and at one time there was a church near the school at some time in the past. It is regrettable that we have no photo of this long forgotten school, but a faint ray of hope at the end of the tunnel, perhaps someone has stored in a trunk in their attic, either a photo of the school or even better a photo of students (hopefully identified) who attended this school. If this information does exist, please forward it to Mrs. Avery at her home at 40 Cushman Street, New Berlin, New York 13411. The pages of this chapter will remain open if such information does surface.
