First Transit bus catches fire in Sherburne

SHERBURNE – A First Transit bus burst into flames while driving on Route 80, east of Sherburne early Friday morning.

Four people, including the driver, were on the bus when, according to Sherburne Fire Chief Patrick Lawrence, the driver noticed flames coming from under the hood of the vehicle. The driver stopped the bus on Route 80, near the Rexford Falls intersection. A Sherburne resident, Mark Wilcox, helped the driver to get the passengers off the bus.

“The vehicle was fully involved by the time the first truck got here,” Lawrence said. The fire reached the vehicles full gas tank, and flames scorched nearby trees. The department was able to get the fire under control in a matter of minutes, however little was left of the bus. Lawrence said other departments were called for aid, but the Sherburne Department did not ultimately need their help.
