Smyrna holds two bicentennial events in September

SMYRNA – Celebrating their 200th anniversary was something residents in the Town of Smyrna decided couldn’t be done in one simple event. The Bicentennial Committee has planned events for every month of the year in celebration of the town’s anniversary.

According to Bicentennial Committee member Barb Schwarting, two events have been planned for the month of September, both of which will require some public participation.

The first event will begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 14 at the Smyrna Fire Department. During the chicken barbecue, the bicentennial committee will be honoring those associated with the Smyrna School. “We are looking for people who worked at the Smyrna School and contributed to the success of our school and all of the students who attended classes there,” Schwarting said. The bicentennial committee hopes students, teachers and staff members associated with the school will attend the event and bring photos, either on poster board or in an album, depicting the school when it was open.

Schwarting said she knows of one teacher who is still in the area who taught in Smyrna for most of her career. Anyone with a connection to the school who will be attending the event is asked to contact the bicentennial committee with their information.
