Finch calls governor’s order to close Norwich compensation site “unacceptable”

SPRINGPORT – Assemblyman Gary D. Finch, R–Springport, has learned that the State of New York Workers’ Compensation Board is planning to close the Norwich Customer Service Center in November 2009.

According to Joseph F. Pennisi, executive director of the Workers’ Compensation Board, Governor David Paterson recently required all state agencies to develop and implement cost reduction measures. As part of their plan, the board is closing 11 of their 30 service centers across the state. The closures are expected save $6 million in the next 10 years.

Staff and claimants will be reassigned to the nearest hearing site. For Chenango County claimants, that will most likely be in Binghamton.

“At a time when the price of gasoline is almost $5 a gallon, Governor Paterson is asking that the residents of Chenango County to drive an extra 80 miles for Workers’ Compensation issues and hearings,” said Finch.
