GREENE – Action Park East Speedway, the well known local motorcycle racetrack in Greene, has announced it will be changing its July 11 event to Saturday, July 12 at 7 p.m. It will be pack the track night and special $6 adult admissions will be offered to the first 150 fans through the gates.
The track had a great crowd opening day on Saturday, May 24, but had to cut the evening short when a fuse on NYSEG’s power pole coming into the property went faulty and the lights went out. At the time the track did not realize it was a problem with the power companies equipment and was unable to let customers know. Since then the track has had two events on Friday nights, something new that was being tried this year, but has not been able to attract the large audience it had on opening night to its Friday shows, although the weather was very poor both of those events.
Promoter, professional hockey player, Jason Bonsignore of Rochester, has decided to change the July 11 race to Saturday July 12th in an effort to attract a big turnout for the pack the track night. Bonsignore’s other track, Champion Speedway in Owego, has been packing them in the first four races and had 70 entries for competitors three weeks ago.
The two facilities provide shows featuring Speedway Motorcycle Racing along with ATV and dirt bike classes for adults and youths. Speedway Motorcycles have no brakes and do zero to sixty miles per hour in less than three seconds. They slide totally sideways around the dirt 1/8 mile ovals at Action Park and Champion. Both tracks attracted thousands of spectators to their events during the 80’s and Bonsignore has revived both venues within the last 10 years and has hosted Nationally known races with world-class competitors. Bonsignore had the fan base at Action Park built back up to near 700-800 for its 2004 races and also had re-opened the Trackside Lounge bar located at the track which became very popular with the locals. The track was getting National attention again but in 2005 Bonsignore decided to lease the track out as he became busy with a track near his home. For the last three years renters operated the track but things declined as the amount of time and effort being spent on the property was less and the Lounge was also closed which hurt crowd appeal.
