8th Dairy Day offers hands-on experience

NORWICH – Several hundred came out for the 8th Annual Chenango County Dairy Day to learn about the local milk industry and see what a day on the farm is like.

The free milk and ice cream was a good draw, too.

Chris Stone, 11, of South New Berlin, said he came to the Chenango County Fairgrounds in Norwich Saturday check out the equipment.

“I like learning about the difference between the tractors that were there at different times,” he said, noticing that tractors have grown larger over the years. “I like tractors because they help people – farmers. They can do more work in day doing what used to take them two or three days.”

Chris’ sister Madelyn, 6, liked the hay bale maze.

“She went through it probably 15 times,” said Madelyn and Chris’ dad, Jerry Stone.

“I liked the part where you get to make the basket of vegetables,” Madelyn added, referring to one of the many farm activities. “I planted a flower, too.”

Jerry, a South New Berlin native who recently moved back to the area, grew up working on local dairy farms and believes it’s important that children and teenagers experience agriculture.

“I grew up on farms. I loved it,” said the elder Stone. “I want my kids to see that life. That there’s something other than computers – like hands on work.”
