CONKLIN – Norwich overcame some ill-timed injuries to overtake Sus Valley and win a girls’ track and field meet, 77-64 Wednesday.

Norwich swept first through third in five events, and helped secure that win taking the 1600-meter relay. In that race, Brittany Barnes and Katie Benenati filled in for injured starters to round out the quartet. Freshman Sarah Spittler also chipped in due to an injury entering the 3000 meters and placing second. “I’m really proud of the girls that took one for the team,” said Norwich co-head coach Phil Curley. “It’s good that they are willing to do what it takes to win and enter events they don’t normally do. You take away those points (we earned), and we don’t win.”

Benenati remained unbeaten in the 100- and 200-meter races to finish with three overall firsts. Kayla May, Elisha Eddy, Cassidy Griffin, and Barnes also grabbed individual wins.

Norwich’s boys dropped a 116-25 final. The lone victory came from Chris Bush, who won the shot put.

Norwich hosts the 3rd Annual REK Invitational beginning at 5 p.m. with the 400-meter memorial run/walk. The public is invited to join participants and meet organizers in the walk, Curley said.
