AFTON – The Afton Community Theater will be performing the popular Musical “GodSpell” on the stage of the Afton Central School auditorium aat 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.
GodSpell is a musical based on the Gospel according to St. Matthew with music and lyrics taken from the Episcopal Hymnal. Additional music and lyrics have been added by Stephen Schwartz from an idea conceived by John-Michael Tebelak.
One of the biggest off-Broadway and Broadway successes of all time, Godspell is based primarily on the Gospel According to St. Matthew. The main story of Godspell is portrayed in the way the players interact with their leader, coming together to create a loving community. A celebration of the life and teachings of Christ.The show presents the lessons and parables of Jesus through game playing as the his followers help act out the parables and teachings in a way that can be understood by all ages. The show is set in a more contemporary surroundings and much of the music has been adapted to rock, folk and even vaudeville tempos. Featuring a sparkling, score by Stephen Schwartz, Godspell boasts a string of recognizable songs, led by the international hit, “Day By Day.” As the cast makes it way through “Prepare Ye The Way Of The Lord,” “Save The People,” “Learn Your Lessons Well,” “Bless The Lord,” “All For The Best,” “All Good Gifts,” “Turn Back, O Man” and “By My Side,” we, as audience members get to see the parables of Jesus Christ come hearteningly to life.
