Tornado field band having a good season

NORWICH – Under the leadership of a new band director, Norwich High School field band musicians have seen success in their first three performances of the season.

Newly-hired high school band director Gretchen Shyne explains although her predecessor Don Burke left big shoes to fill, she feels she and the rest of the band staff and 60 field band students are adjusting well. She says the themes for her musicians in her first year are “try hard” and “everyone matters.”

“When there are not very many players on each instrument, everyone has to know what they are doing,” she said.

The selected works for this year’s show, props and all, are from “My Fair Lady,” which Shyne explains is interesting because the same show was chosen for the high school musical performance this year as well.

Shyne says the kids are continuing to work diligently to stay competitive with other districts. In the first show of the season in Oswego, the Tornado band placed second with a score of 75.3, just behind New Hartford in first with 78.1. The second show of the season in Auburn saw Norwich taking home first place, earning 78.45. The third show of the season in Corning East saw the Norwich band earning 82 points, just shy of a win behind New Hartford, which placed first with an 85.
