Oxford blaze claims rural home and injures two

OXFORD – The Oxford Fire Department responded to a house fire Monday night which destroyed a home and injured two people.

At around 11:23 p.m., fire crews received a call about a structure fire at 1527 County Road 27 in the Town of Oxford.

The two-story rural home was “totally engulfed in flames” by the time crews arrived at the scene, said Chenango County Fire Coordinator Matt Beckwith. The occupants of the home, Richard and Sally Hoffman, both suffered minor injuries as a result of the blaze.

Richard woke during the night to the smell of smoke and discovered flames creeping along the wall. While attempting to fight the fire, Richard suffered smoke inhalation. Sally suffered from minor burns and injured herself when she was forced to leap from the second-story window.
