Wahlberg named Guilford's Citizen of the Year

GUILFORD –  The 2007 Citizen of the Year was awarded to Clara Wahlberg, for her years of continued dedicated service to the Town of Guilford during the town’s Memorial Day services. Clara was also awarded a citation given by the Honorable Clifford Crouch from the New York State Assembly, presented by Guilford Historical president, Gertie Pierce-Boyd. A most memorable and touching moment occurred as Clara was also presented a bouquet of flowers by the Carry On 4H Club and the Guilford Girl Scout Brownies, to show their appreciation to her and her efforts to provide a clean, warm meeting place for their organizations.

Wahlberg worked as an executive secretary for 41 years, first as a secretary to the Director of Veterans Services, Chenango County, and then as secretary to the administer of the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford. She often jokes she was born with a steno pad in one hand and a phone in the other.

She has been the secretary/treasurer of the Pioneer Cemetery, North Guilford since 1986, as well as chairman of the Guilford Community Group. She is also a life member, trustee, and former treasurer of the Guilford Historical Society and is active in the fight against the power line. She has been past secretary to Guilford’s Planning Board serving from 1988 to 1990. She donated time to the Guilford Assessor’s office from 1978-1988.
