City names new firefighters

NORWICH – Three new firefighters were sworn in at Thursday night’s meeting of the Public Works and Public Safety Committee. Despite the fact that only one of the three council members who make up the committee was able to attend, the meeting still went off without a hitch.

Police Chief and acting Fire Chief Joseph Angelino began the meeting by swearing in two part-time and one full-time firemen. Tim Llwellyn of Norwich was appointed to fill the full-time position. Darryl Prindle, who was filling a position as a volunteer assistant fire chief, was appointed as a paid, part-time fire fighter. Robert Barnes was appointed as the other part-time firefighter. Barnes was a member of the department a few years ago, but had to leave for personal reasons.

According to Angelino, bringing on members who have already been trained is a real asset to the department.

Much attention has been devoted to costs at the fire department, including the costs of benefits and retirement. Angelino explained that the part-time firemen are paid only an hourly rate, and have no benefits associated with the positions.
